First Grade is a time of great growth for students. There is a tremendous amount of knowledge and information to acquire. I absolutely love teaching first grade because I am able to see the tremendous growth that occurs throughout the course of the year in each and every child. It is such a joy to watch these young minds at work!
Below you will find links to Engage NY--our math program, a list of first grade sight words, and some information about literacy, science and social studies themes. I Mrs. Knight's Classroom Rules

Literacy During literacy, we work through five centers on a daily basis:
Building our Sight Word knowledge is very important in Grade One. Sight Words are those words we need to know "on sight" because they don't follow grammatical rules. Students not only need to be able to read these words, but also spell them in their daily writing. SIGHT WORDS |
MathOur math program, Engage NY covers six modules and a broad spectrum of topics. If you explore the link below, you can find the modules that we are covering in class, which can assist with homework and for extra practice at home. You can find the current module and lesson by looking on the bottom right hand corner of the Problem Set or Homework that your child comes home with daily.
We do not follow the modules in chronological order. When looking to see what module we are currently studying, it is the number that comes first on the bottom right hand side of your child's Problem Set or Homework page. So, 4.A. 10 would indicate module 4, topic A, page 10. https://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-1-mathematics-module-1 |
Social Studies + Science Science and Social studies are woven into our literacy curriculum. We incorporate the themes into writing, hand on art activities, and classroom discussions. The themes offer a real world approach to leaning and investigating the world around us.
